 the early years

The first time Jena was mentioned in german chronicles about 850 A.D. as Jani. In the 13th century Jena became a "town", 1523 there was the Reformation and in 1558 the first university was founded by Johann Friedrich Curfürst von Sachsen (Saxony).


 Napoleon and the glass

At the end of the 18th century the famous poet Goethe lived in Jena, and wrote e.g. his famous "Erlkönig". Also Schiller had spended some time in Jena.
In 1806 Napoleon won against Prussia very near Jena and still nowadays a "pont d'Ièna" and a "Avenue d'Ièna" in Paris remember this event. At the beginning of the 19th century was the foundation of the first students' fraternity in Germany, which some still exist.
In the time between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th the companies Carl Zeiss, Schott Glass and Jenapharm were founded and Carl Zeiss developed together with Ernst Abbe and Otto Schott the still famous Jena glass
